Erik ten Hag officially confirmed the signing of Lisandro Martinez for a fee worth £46 million plus ad-ons. The newly appointed manager of Manchester United was keen to bring the Argentine defender to Old Trafford.
According to the Daily Mail, ten Hag spoke to the media during his press conference, the Dutchman stated:
“He [Martinez] is a warrior and I think the fans will admire him. He has an attitude, fighting spirit. He brings aggressiveness in the game, in a good way. I think we need that.
“But also, he’s so skillful and he can deal with the ball and he’s left-footed”, ten Hag added.
The former Ajax defender is set to be the third signing of the English giants following the arrivals of Tyrell Malacia and Christian Eriksen. Martinez is reportedly scheduled to undergo a medical at Carrington to complete his move to Manchester United.
The boss was desperate to bolster his defense after the English giants registered their worst defensive record in the 2021/22 campaign and it was no doubt that a center-back would be a priority. Ten Hag feels that Martinez has attributes to compete in the English top-flight.
“I think the Premier League is high intensity, lots of challenges. We need such players [with fighting spirit]”, the boss added.
“Certain ideas, he knows them. That is an advantage, clearly.”
Martinez is reportedly set to reunite with his former manager from Ajax after the club’s pre-season tour in Australia.
