The saga of Frankie de Jong has taken the center stage within Manchester United fraternity. The Athletic reported that Chelsea has now entered the race to sign de Jong amid interest from Manchester United.

Chelsea hierarchy met with Barcelona on Thursday to discuss the transfer of the Dutchman. This is despite rumors and the ongoing transfer saga between the Red Devils and Barcelona since the start of the window in June.

Manchester United and Barcelona agreed for the transfer of de Jong on a fee worth £72 million plus add-ons, two weeks ago. Sources suggest that that the no.21 has no intention of leaving the Nou Camp.

The Spanish giants are reportedly owing de Jong deferred wages worth around £17 million. The 25-year-old midfielder is said to be demanding payment of his deferred wages before departing the club. It is no doubt that Barca’s financial situation makes the transfer much more complex.

The Blues are favorites to win the bidding war of de Jong although sources suggest that the Dutchman is more inclined to join his former boss from Ajax – Erik ten Hag. Manchester United are in a precarious position after the club failed to qualify for UEFA Champions League. This predicament has lessened their chances to attract elite players.

It remains to be seen if de Jong will leave Spain. In the event that he does leave, it will be interesting to see whether the former Amsterdam based player will head to Old Trafford or Stamford-Bright.
