Manchester United sealed an impressive 3-0 victory over Leicester City on home turf. Jadon Sancho and the in form Marcus Rashford were on the scoresheet.
The home side started on the front foot but it was Brandon Rodgers army that had better chances in the opening stages of the game.
Harvey Barnes and Kelechi Iheanacho were presented with open cut chances only for David de Gea to come to the rescue. The latter headed the ball from close range but the Spaniard kept the scoreline intact.
Marcus Rashford broke the deadlock on the 25th minute following an assist from Bruno Fernandes. The Englishman strucked past Danny Ward to give the hosts the lead.
United completely put the Foxes to sword in the second-half in what could be one of the best performances in the Ten Hag era.
Rashford once again came to the party when he doubled the lead for the hosts. The goal was awarded following a lengthy VAR check for possible offside.
Sancho was introduced in the second-half for Alejandro Garnacho. Jadon made instant impact when he scored the third goal following an interchange of passes between Rashford and Fernandes.
The scoreline finished at 3-0 to Manchester United. The Red Devils could have scored more goals, thanks to Ten Hag masterclass.
Rashford sets new record for Manchester United
Marcus scored his 24th goal this season which is his highest goal tally for Manchester United. He previously scored 22 goals in the 2019/20 campaign.
According to Manchester United official page, the English international has 14 Premier League goals; five in the Carabao Cup; four in the UEFA Europa League; and one in the FA Cup.
Daily Mail quoted the remarks of the 25-year-old during the post-match interview. Rashford said:
“Obviously, we are there, we are close. At the same time, both teams in front of us are really good teams and they are playing good football at the minute as well.”
“Overall, a good day. They [Leicester] created good opportunities and David made a great save at the end of the first half. Without that, we can’t go on to win the game.”
When asked about Premier League title credentials, Rashford responded: “It’s still early in the season. We’re fighting for a lot of different things.”
Marcus added: “We have another big game in the week to hopefully go through to the next round of the Europa League and then a massive game for us [against Newcastle].”
“I don’t feel like slowing down and always want to improve. We have to just focus on ourselves, do as well as we can and keep picking up points.”
Ten Hag post-match analysis
Ten Hag told Sky Sports that: “We’re happy with the result, it’s a great result. When you play every third day you can’t always get to your same performance. Today was really tough.”
“First half Leicester played brilliant, we were rubbish, the way we were really undisciplined. We had problems and it was only because of David de Gea that we had a clean sheet at half-time.”
He added: “Luckily we had half-time, we could repair some things and the second half was brilliant. There was a lot of pleasure, it was enjoyable to watch how we created so many chances and scored great goals.”
“Rashford is getting in the positions but don’t forget the team. I want to highlight Bruno again. Two great assists. There are so many players that can pass [Rashford] the ball in the right moment like Bruno, Jadon, Fred.”
“Sancho is in the right direction. He does not know his limits and there’s a lot of space for improvement, though already he is at a high level.”
When asked about title credentials, the Dutchman responded: “We don’t think about the title race. We think about the next game.”
“Thursday is going to be a big game for us. We have to fight, our fans to make Old Trafford a fortress and the game plan has to be right.”
United unbeaten run at Old Trafford
It is no doubt that Ten Hag has turned Old Trafford into a fortress that it used to be during the era of Sir Alex Ferguson.
Manchester United is now unbeaten in 17 home games in all competition this season. United is expected to increase the home run when they welcome Barcelona next Thursday for the Europa League second-leg tie.
