Jack Butland completed a transfer to Manchester United following his medical at Carrington. Crystal Palace opened the door for Butland to make a switch to Old Trafford on loan, United Radar understands.
The English goalkeeper will add as a second goalkeeper alongside Tom Heaton and Nathan Bishop. This will further intensify competition for David de Gea.
Erik ten Hag brought Butland in a bid to fill the void in the goalkeeper department. This follows the departure of Martin Dubravka on New Year’s Day.
Daily Mail confirmed that Martin had been recalled by the Magpies to cut short his loan spell at United due to lack of game time.
The statement by United read: “Martin Dubravka has been recalled from his season-long loan to Manchester United by his parent club Newcastle United.”
Martin announced his departure on the first day of the calendar year. The Mirror quoted the remarks of the Slovakian international:
“Although short, it has been an enjoyable experience in Manchester and I wish to sincerely thank all the coaches, staff, players and fans of MUFC for their warmth and support during my loan spell.”
“Regarding Newcastle, I have been delighted to see the club make such an impressive start to the season! Newcastle is my home and I will be back to support the squad and the goalkeeping group for the second half of the season.”
“As always I will give my all to the team and will contribute in any way that I can to hopefully a memorable season. Wishing you all a very happy new year!”
According to Manchester Evening News, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe revealed that Dubravka himself requested a return to St. James Park.
Howe said: “Martin’s situation is that he wanted to come back, and we were delighted to welcome him back.”
“There was never an issue between me and Martin. He’s a top goalkeeper, and I’m delighted to welcome him back to the squad.”
The arrival of Butland will no doubt strengthen the goalkeeper department at Manchester United. The Athletic reported that the loan agreement in place does not include an option to buy.
The 29-year-old has six months remaining on his contract at Palace. The London based club is set to activate an option of extending to a further one year, come end of the season.
Ten Hag could unleash Butland in the coming cup ties. The English giants are set to face Everton and Charlton in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup respectively.

“I’m really looking forward to working with an unbelievable goalkeeping group, supporting each other every day to create the best training and playing environment for the team.”
Jack added: “I’ve played against David De Gea and represented England alongside Tom Heaton; they are top-class keepers, and I am relishing the opportunity to compete alongside and support them as team-mates.”
“There is a lot that this group can achieve this season and I’m excited to play my part in helping everyone to reach these ambitions.”
Manchester United football director, John Murtough said: “Jack is an excellent goalkeeper with great experience throughout his career.”
